GREAT TV FOR THE $$$
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This TV is huge! I really like this tv it was well worth the wait…
Pros:
Great Picture quality specially for PS3 games and Xbox360 and my Wii even looks awesome.
Bluetooth remote i just love this thing! the layout take a few days to get used to but its awesome!
LOTS of hookups on the back 5 hdmi! this thing rocks!
VIA apps.. netflix.. amazon… ect… this is pretty cool to be able to get weather and watch movies with out turning on multiple devices.. afterall this is a engerystar tv why turn on a power hungry cable box to get what this tv does on its own!
Cons:
but it looks like a very well thought out and built unit
This TV is heavy! its about 90lbs
This TV is THICK! it looks to be about 4-5in thick. its not nearly as slim as some of the other comparable tv’s BUT its a WHOLE lot cheaper!
The sound out of the tv speakers is “ok” but i’ve added a 5.1 suround and most people will so i cant say this is a huge con!
Overall i would rate this TV 5stars! becuase of the $$$ value and what you get it just a awesome looking picture and a great new features that are only availible on units that cost $1500 more!
The biggest thing that stuck out to me was that Blue-Ray movies looks really crisp and look soo life like that they almost pop off the screen! The LED blacklighting is amazing i used to have a 52in $ony LCD and it didnt look half as good as this one and it cost more! If your on the fence on this purchase just go for it it was truely a good buy. Plus playing games on this tv is sweet everything looks really really good the detail just blows me away.
Great Decision
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I read all the reviews, even the super long super critical one! But, I bought the Vizio VF552XVT at Costco for $1,999 anyway. Best decision I ever made. Setup was a breeze. My DirecTV DVR works great with HDMI cables, my new Sony Blue Ray hooked up flawlesly. I ran an optical cable from the TV to my 10 year old very good Yamaha Receiver and my Polk speakers and sub fill the room with Dolby5.1 sound. Amazingly simple install with miles of old cables discarded from my old DVD and Samsung DLP. I think some of the other reviews are too picky. Yes the Samsung is great, but who has $500-$1000 more to spend on it and once you are home with just the Vizio and $1,000 in your pocket you will be very happy. Internet Apps worked great the first time, but I am not sure I will install a wireless router to use them all the time. It is a good idea to hook up your modem from your computer at least periodically to get firmware updates, I already got one. For now, I am happy with a TV in one room and a computer in the other.
I do hope that Vizio will activate their USB ports for picture, video and music. For now, thankfully my Sony Blu Ray has an active USB port which plays my Ipod Nano through my sound system without buying a new receiver or docking station. It also plays pictures from a thumb drive. Vizio, you need to get these ports active with apps for music, video and pictures!
I have only had two issues with installing my Vizio. First is that the bluetooth setting for the remote does not seem to work right. I set it up as instructed, but I still have to point the remote to the TV. The other problem is with the Sony Bu Ray. For some reason a Blue Ray disk plays in Dolby 5.1 until the movie starts and then it changes to ProLogic. I am sure I will figure this out or call Costo service or Sony.
Bottom line is buy the Vizio and then get a Blu Ray and new receiver with the money you save.
Best Value in 55″ TV’s
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had a 55″ Hitachi projection TV about 5 years old and for the past year kept looking for a TV to replace it. I had certain requirements which were hard to come by. I wanted 55-58″, low power consumption, Wireless N built in to the TV(very hard to find), LED backlighting(not just partial LED). And I wanted to spend less then $2k. Then about a month ago the Hitachi broke and I HAD to find a TV and stumbled upon this Vizio which, miraculously, had all the features I wanted.
I use a Harmony ONE universal remote so just transferred all the remote settings to that and the lack of backlight on the TV remote is not an issue unless you use the remotes built-in keyboard which I found was only needed during set up of different internet Apps for the most part.
The Video is astounding. I’ve gotten a certain reaction to HD in the past from certain females: “I don’t see much difference”, What?! Not with this TV, a typical reaction: “Wow, this is the first time even I can see a difference”. The Blu-Ray quality is so good I don’t see anyway a TV can improve on it. I did search the internet for help in setting up the picture settings as the default settings I thought were a little off. My only issue is I have 1 optimum setting for movies, 1 setting for movies when it’s dark and 1 setting for sports. You can save several settings so that helps. The quality is excellent all the way through on my preferred set up but I was amazed how little changes could improve the quality of certain types of movies/shows.
I use HDMI from the cable box and from the PS3 and use the analog cables from the old receiver for outside the TV audio though the built in speakers work really well(surprisingly). If you are buying this TV and using DVD or cable you should have HDMI inputs for those devices. For a savings of $700++ over similar competitor TV’s I think the savings by having less non-HDMI inputs is a good trade off. You can’t get 1080P without the HDMI anyways.
Since I can plug my laptop into the side HDMI port I really don’t know if the USB ports are of any use to me. There are conflicting answers from Vizio tech on whether a future upgrade will activate these or not. They are currently only for techs to use. Since you can do more with a laptop anyways, I find I probably wouldn’t use the USB cables, also the PS3 has USB ports. Other than a very minor convenience issue, I personally don’t see a big need for USB ports being active but if it’s important to you be aware they may never be active, or they may.
I’m not a big PIP user so can’t really comment on the negatives on that.
Overall, the value for the money is incredible. If you can wait The Pro TV’s are tentatively scheduled for August(they are usually pushing back dates so we’ll see if that happens) which will be 3D compatible, 480Hz refresh rate, 120 zones of LED versus the current 80 zones(for 55″), wireles HDMI and will run $2500(supposedly). Not a big price difference from these sets but I would expect when those come out these will drop in price a bit and the Pro TV’s may sell a little cheaper than MSRP. I would check the Vizio website for the description on the Pro TV’s and see if it’s worth waiting but if you need a TV now, this is the best option out there.
I’ve had no smear issues or reboot issues or any issues whatsoever with quality so far.
Slight improvements I could recommend
1) Allow you to turn off the Vizio Logo Light at the bottom front. Not really distracting but I could see where some people would not like it
2) Move the side inputs to the front or add some front inputs that they can hide behind a panel that you open. If you have a video camera or a laptop then plugging into the side inputs, depending on your setup, can be harder to get at than front panel inputs would.
If you take into consideration the price(how can’t you) there really is no other rating than 5 stars.
Disappointed…not quite ready for prime time
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I sold my Vizio 551 after only 4 months of owning it to purchase this unit in the hopes of getting the “latest and greatest”. Sadly, outside of picture quality, it was a step down in almost every other regard.
First the Remote. Maybe I was spoiled by the beautifully designed remote from the 551. Great looks, backlit keys, good tactile feedback…it had everything that the remote on the 552 lacks. Start with appearance: it literally looks like a prototype. Cheap black plastic with tiny black rubber keys…I have remotes from $29 DVD players that are better looking. And from a functional standpoint, it commits the 3 cardinal sins of bad remote control design: 1) no backlighting of any of the keys…forget about using it without lights blazing. Kinda ruins the theater experience 2) keys provides tactile feedback without executing their function…this means you’ll press the Chnl Up key, feel the indent beneath your finger and you’ll still be watching the same channel you were. 3) tiny tiny keys…unless you’re an elf, you’ll be fat-fingering. It’s just a bad design. I sincerely hope Vizio provides all of their early-adopters (like me) with a free replacement of the newly designed remote when it’s available (and they WILL redesign this, as this device has no place with their flagship set).
Next, the USB ports…they don’t work! It says so right in the manual (though not in any of Vizio’s promotional literature). I LOVED the single USB port on my 551…plug in a thumbdrive with pictures and music and you had your own custom Slideshow. Can’t do it on my new TV. Tech support says there’ll be a future firmware upgrade to fix ‘em…I ain’t holding my breath.
Another item that’ll be “fixed with a future firmware upgrade” is the ability to turn off the backlighting behind the annoying Tech Logo on the bottom left-hand corner of the set beneath the screen (another menu function my 551 was able to perform that the 552 can’t). Here you have a six inch long, 1 inch tall feature list (i.e. VIA LED LCD 240 HZ 1080P and other stuff) backlit by bright white LEDs…again really annoying when in a darkened setting. Until the “fix” comes in, I have a piece of black electrical tape covering them up on the front of my $2000 TV…irritating (NOTE: the manual SAYS that you can turn this off by navigating to the ‘Help’ portion of the menu system, but the choice does NOT show up on the screen in the list of Help options)
Onto the network connectivity, the reason I bought the set: at this point, I’d say it’s working to Vizio’s advantage more than mine. It gives them a method to ‘upgrade’ the product with automatic firmware updates, which is great. But it also gave them latitude to introduce something that clearly ain’t quite “baked” yet. The Widgets are ‘cute’, but (at this stage) they’re nothing that you can’t get from a feature-laden BluRay player with networking.
More importantly (and more annoyingly), I’ve found that while exploring / navigating some of the Widgets, they will actually make the 552 ‘reboot’ (i.e. shut itself off, then (sometimes) turn itself back on. Other times it just remains ‘off’ and you have to hit the Power button). I can only imagine that the app itself crashed and that the reboot is the equivalent of the old ‘blue screen of death’ in Windows. Again, nothing that a firmware update (or tighter quality control on Widgets) won’t fix, but this thing definitely ain’t ready for prime time…it performs more like a Beta unit
You may think this critique is nitpicking, but keep in mind that i was expecting an “upgrade” from my 551.
Having said all that, it’s still the best bang for your LCD buck. But if you’re a current owner of a 551, there’s no compelling reason to make the switch just yet.
Hope this helps in your buying decision (and in getting me a new remote…anyone from Vizio reading this? ; )
VIZIO VF552XVT 55-Inch
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is the most awesome TV right out of the box. Amazon shipped it free … set it up and took away the trash! I live in a condo and everyone can’t believe it is so awesome. My neighbor bought one for himself! My son-in-law bought the mega blaster SONY for around $3800 on sale and he says this beats it. You can not go wrong with this TV.
Sweet tv.

I have like most of you reading this have read a lot of reviews. Analyzed CNET, Best Buy and other electronic reviews.
This is the best quality for price= value you can find. The look and function of this TV are unsurpassed. It is a little deeper than I thought but it is still within the reasonable range for wall mounting.
The blacks are black, colors vived, and best of all there is NO BLURRING during action sequences. I was pissed at my last LCD TV that I bought for my upstairs room. The same movies on this Vizio is not really much of a comparison.
Only bad is the remote looks cheap…..WHO CARES…..The remote functions well and you don’t need a degree to set it up. Really cool TV.
Other note about AMAZON…..I know this isn’t about Amazon but WHAT A COMPANY….Had my TV on time and the guy actually set it up and got is running. He explained everything and was even patient with my daughters asking a thousand questions.
I’m very glad I bought this tv.
Love it

This TV is all I expected it to be. So far I am very happy with it. Cons: Needs more apps, need to have the USB ports to work, you need to bring the TV back to manuf. setting in order to use tv remote on the vizio blue-ray.
Actual input lag and refresh rates of VF552XVT
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This review is only based on one thing; actual input lag of HDMI. You will see all companies try and advertise low refresh rates but you never see the actual stat’s on input lag. If you are an avid gamer and want the best gaming experience this will most definitely matter. This set according to the avs forums [...] has on average 3 frames of latency (around 62ms – 75ms). Go check out the forum if you want to see a greater detail of how they came up with these numbers. This set definitely is on a bit high on latency vs other sets.
WoW and WOW!! This TV is Awesome!!

Well just hooked it all up and it was really simple, all my devices Dish Network VIP622 satellite box and panisonic blueray player both can be operated by this awesome remote, even the dish remote found the code for the Vizio tv. The HD picture is wonderful absolutely beautiful when watching blueray. HD thru the dish reciever is great to, i just wish they would make all the channels HD because the standard picture is good but after seeing the HD channels there is a major difference in quality. Not really messed with the online features yet but my tv found my ATT 2wire router just fine and connected wirelessly 1st try. I could not be more happy with my decision to get this tv… It replaced our 6o” philips projection. do not even miss those extra 5″ it is worth it. I also purchased a TV Defender screen protector witch does not affect the picture at all and really makes me feel better having two young boys.. I will say that the straps cannot go thru to the back of the tv above the sound bar its blocked so the strap goes down over the sound bar. Oh well my investment is protected. You will not be sorry it is a great TV for the price.
UPDATE: 5-19-2005
Well I guess i should have waited a few weeks to Review. I still Love the TV but haveing a few problems. Wireless card has completely went out, after only 3 weeks. Also the HDMI inputs are having trouble as well, sometimes it takes awhile to find a signal. Says No Signal so i turn tv back off and on until it finds it. I have bought 3 different HDMI cables, so i am pretty sure its the TV. Customer service was Great tho, they have ordered a new wireless card and will have a repair man come out next wed. to look at the inputs and change out the card. I will update again then. Hopefully this will be the end of the trouble…..
Great tv, great picture, great price

This tv has been an excellent purchase and exactly what I was hoping for. Very nice picture, vivid colors, and the internet apps are a fun bonus. The video settings could be better… why offer different pre-set options for different sports, with no apparent difference between them? It would be nice to have a backlit remote… but those are quibbles. Love my new tv.
